FAQ

Here we'll be storing the most frequently asked questions on the Filmaster forum. Hopefully this page will help to clarify those issues.

How do the recommendations work?

The recommendations are computed basing on the ratings of other users that we know share with you a similar taste in movies. The list of recommended movies is simply a list of films sorted by the average rating of people with a good taste in movies (i.e. similar to yours).

More technical details about the recommendations can be found on the developer's portal in section: Recommendations engine.

What is The Planet?

The Filmaster Planet simply aggregates all user activities like comments, short and long reviews (more to come in the future). It's a way to keep up to date with the latest posts. It's also a good place to check what your comrades are up to, since you can filter The Planet to show only the posts of your selected comrades. Another neat feature is the ability to filter out all the posts of users with poor movie taste (i.e. much different than yours). It makes sense if you only want to hear from the users who are likely to recommend you the movies you might like. More filters are coming in the future including tag filter and a filter to show only the users you decide to follow (another new feature to come).

What are the reviews?

Well, that's fairly understood, we believe. The reviews (or blog posts, as we sometimes call it more generally) are your personal opinions about a movie or a set of movies. Those tend to be longer than the shorts that you write on movies' pages). Reviews can be posted from your dashboard using the Write review page. Reviews can be of unlimited length, they can be linked to one or more movies, actors or directors.

Where do the reviews show up?

  • in your blog at yourname.filmaster.com/reviews
  • on The Planet,
  • on home pages of the relevant movies and people (REVIEWS block).

Also, best reviews are published on the home page of Filmaster in the "Featured review" and "Other interesting review" sections. Currently they are arbitrarly placed there by the moderators. In the future it will work automatically basing on the users' votes (new feature to come).

What are the shorts?

Shorts aka short reviews are supposed to present your personal impressions about the movie in an abbreviated form (a few sentences). You can add them on the home page of a particular movie or in the "rating machine" so that you can add them while rating movies. The lenght of a short review is restricted to 500 characters. What if you want to write more? Well, write a proper review in such case!

Where do the short reviews appear?

  • together with your reviews, comments and other activities on your blog at yourname.filmaster.com/shorts
  • next to the movies together with your rating, so that others can instantly see it when checking out the film to watch,
  • and on The Planet together with all other activities.

How do I rate movies?

You can search for the movies you have recently watched and rate them on their home pages. You can also use our "rating machine" which suggests you the movies you might have watched and lets you rate them instantly one by one.

Each movie can be rated in many categories (general impression, screenplay, cinematography, special effects, etc), but you don't need to rate all movies in all available categories. In order to get the recommendations it's enough to rate movies in the main category (Film). The more movies you rate, the better our suggestions are.

Where can I find my ratings?

All your ratings can be found at filmaster.com/ratings. You can browse your ratings by category. Filtering of your ratings based on directors and movie titles is upcoming.

Where can I find others' ratings?

All ratings are public. Just go to user.filmaster.com/ratings to see all the ratings of a particular user. You can browse the ratings by category. Filtering of the ratings based on directors and movie titles is upcoming.

What is the Forum?

The Film Forum is a place aggregating all the discussions about movies and people (actors, directors) on Filmaster. The discussions are grouped into threads. You can start a new thread (a form on the right) or just join any existing discussion. The threads concerning particular movies and people appear also on their home pages in the FORUM block. Additionally, all recent comments appear on The Planet, just like any other activities.

How do I edit my public profile?

Go to your private Dashboard (the link below your avatar on the top-right). There you can add/edit your reviews (published one and drafts), read and write private messages, send invitations or eventually edit your public profile and upload your avatar. Remember that by default all the data you provide is publicly visible to other on your public profile (consult our privacy policy to learn more).
