Another Earth (2010)

dir: Mike Cahill

When another planet appears over Earth’s horizon it doesn’t much affect ambitious student Rhoda, or successful composer John. But as their lives collide in tragic circumstances, both their dreams and futures are shattered beyond recognition. As it becomes clear that the planet is another Earth, people begin to raise questions about the possibility of alternate versions of themselves, versions that may have taken other decisions.

A good science-fiction story is more about the people who populate it than it is about the technological marvels or scientific wonders that fill it. Another Earth certainly fulfils that mandate; at heart it is a powerful human drama that uses its sci-fi concept to tease out questions its characters would prefer to go unanswered. The lo-fi, indie tone of the film grounds the fantastical elements and focuses attention back onto the strange, dysfunctional relationship of Rhoda and John, predicated as it is on deception and tragedy.

First-time writer/director Mike Cahill coaxes beautifully honest and intimate performances from his two stars, William Mapother and co-writer Brit Marling, surely a rising star behind, as well as in front of the camera. Another Earth is another take on the independent sci-fi film, centred on the human story of two fragile and deeply fractured individuals just wishing for another chance. (James Burbidge, Raindance)
