Coraline (2009)

dir: Henry Selick

Coraline Jones (Dakota Fanning) moves with her mother (Teri Hatcher) and father (John Hodgman) from her comfortable life in Pontiac, Michigan to the Pink Palace, a dilapidated three-apartment building in Ashland, Oregon, which is also occupied by retired actresses Misses Spink (Jennifer Saunders) and Forcible (Dawn French), and eccentric Russian acrobat Mr. Bobinsky (Ian McShane). With her parents perpetually working on a gardening catalog and paying little attention to her, Coraline feels neglected and decides to explore their new home, befriending Wybie Lovat (Robert Bailey, Jr.), the grandson of the apartments' landlady. While exploring, Coraline finds a small door sealed off by a brick wall. That night, Coraline is awakened by a mouse and follows it to the small door where she discovers that the brick wall has been replaced with a long, dark corridor. Coraline goes through it and finds herself in the Other World, a fantastical parallel version of the Pink Palace inhabited by doppelgangers of her parents called the Other Mother and Other Father, who have black buttons for eyes. These beings prove to be warmer and more attentive than Coraline's real parents, particularly the Other Mother, who does everything she can to impress Coraline. Coraline decides to stay the night at the Other World, but when she awakes the next morning, she finds herself in her old world. (Wikipedia)

Coraline has a lot of style, and it's like a bit Alice in Wonderland, just a little darker. A lot of things can be said about the movie but i think the most important one is that the movie has one of the most creative plot in years.

An uneven effort, with great visuals and music but a script that falls flat at times. Some parts feel like a non-interactive video game of sorts. Other parts are just dull. Some parts are very engaging, though.

This is a wonderful movie for children, featuring a world ripe with hidden secrets and curious oddities. Unfortunately the enchantment is missing the humour of similar titles, and falls apart in the third act when it fails to go dark enough. Overall a fantastic effort, with great voice acting, and some truly magical scenes (the opening in particular) that comes together as a good movie, but can't quite grasp greatness.

Boring. Expected better voice acting, especially considering the strides made the past 10 or so years. The story was weak, I almost fell asleep watching this. Aside from the fact that its stop motion, there's nothing special here.

Coraline left me breathless. The imagery, music, and 3D technology were adventure enough, but the story was moving and inspired. I want to see more like this. I want the soundtrack!
