Habemus Papam (2011)

dir: Nanni Moretti

The film begins with the funeral of an unnamed pope (Moretti chose the real footage of the funeral of John Paul II) and all the cardinals have to gather in the Sistine Chapel in order to elect the new pope. Journalists assume that cardinal Gregori will be elected but cardinal Melville is surprisingly elected. They ask him "Do you wish to be the new pope?" and, first he doesn't even answer, then they ask again and they go on as if he accepted. The oldest cardinal goes to the balcony to announce the new pope but he has to stop when he hears the scream of cardinal Melville.

The film wastes itself on silliness and scattered threads before very long, truly squandering a brilliant promise. Read the review

By turns sweet, sad, funny and poignant, We Have a Pope is the story of a man who doesn't want to be God's representative on Earth. Read the review

It's more of a character study, insightful and nuanced, about a man grappling with a profound sense of inadequacy, questioning himself. In many ways, We Have a Pope recalls last year's Os... Read the review

There are elements of comedy here, and some very low-key slapstick, but the film is respectful to the Catholic Church and the papacy and takes no cheap shots. Read the review

Whenever it stays with Piccoli, though, it's mysterious and moving, struck by the humility of a man who's not up to playing God. Read the review

As lukewarm as We Have a Pope may be as a piece of filmmaking, Moretti doesn't tread particularly gently into sacred territory. The picture could be more irreverent, but at least it dares... Read the review

The wonderful Polish actor Jerzy Stuhr plays the harried papal spokesman. It's a marvelous movie until the halfway point, when it unaccountably devolves into silliness. Read the review

We Have a Pope is not the filmmaker's next assault on a Roman patriarch. It's a half-sweet, half-rueful existential drama in which the satire comes secondary. Read the review
