Samuraj (1967)

Tytuł oryginalny: Le Samouraï

reż: Jean-Pierre Melville

Jef Costello jest samotnym, płatnym zabójcą. Po wykonaniu kolejnego zadania, łapie go policja.

Every time I think I'm sick and tired of movies about gangsters and criminals, I see another one that restores my faith in the genre. What I like the most about Le Samouraï is the excellent direction. It's just, so, perfect. It's like the camera and the characters are always positioned exactly where they're supposed to be.

I'm a bit on the fence about the movie. In a lot of ways it's incredibly compelling... the crooked tactics of the police, the poetic atmosphere and almost leisurely attitude, and of course Delon's icy portrayal. Still, I don't think it's as great as it's often hyped up to be.

This film is infused with an otherworldly calm, as Delon's Costello slides through it with chilling grace. The thoughtful pace of the film heightens the anticipation, just as its smooth soundtrack punctuate the powerfully subtle emotions of its players. This masterpiece is rounded out with an effortless minimalism that makes the ideal canvas for this portrait of raw will crafted into a stark idealism that is enviable, pitiable, and melancholic. Weeping or exuberation would feel like betrayal.

The now-famous weirdly pure gangster movie. Pretty damn good.

The Euro-version of a US gangster yarn presented with eloquence and beauty by the brilliant dir Jean-Pierre Melville. Hitman Alain Delon has a date with destiny. Forget the cafe-creme.

Stylish, restrained and cold. The music and suitedly cool and emotionless performance of Delon gives it a sad edge as well, a sense of longing, perhaps for death. It's not quite my cup of tea, but I can certainly see the appeal and enjoy it for what it is.

The sequence from the beginning of the film until the end of the police lineup is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. It's suspenseful and mysterious and gorgeous to look at all at the same time. At times I totally forgot that I was watching a French movie. Also, the canary scenes... my God! So well done, and damned creative. What an excellent movie experience.

Take ten renowned directors from different decades, let them shoot this script; I believe none of them can make it with such elegance. I don't have much eye for smarter-than-thou ganster fiction. The score, pastel colors, rain, countless shadowplay, expanding camerawork, on the clock editing and Delon at his best are the merits of irrepeatable performance called Le Samouraï.
