Blind Chance (1981)

Original title: Przypadek

dir: Krzysztof Kieslowski

Blind Chance (Polish: Przypadek) is a Polish film directed by Krzysztof Kieślowski. Made in 1981, the film was suppressed by the Polish authorities for several years. The work branches out into three separate story lines, which are told in succession. Witek (Bogusław Linda), sitting on an airplane, for some reason screams "No!" and the opening credits begin rolling as the camera zooms into his open mouth. A bleeding person is dragged across a hospital floor. As a child, Witek learns how to write. As an adoloscent, Witek dates Czuszka. As an adult, Witek goes to medical school but 'loses' his calling after the death of his father. Witek decides to catch a train to Warsaw. There he crashes into a fellow drinking beer. Three different outcomes are shown depending on how Witek deals with the obstacles on his way to catching the train and whether or not he catches the train. (Freebase)

Anybody gifted with enough introspection and intellect goes through the maze of pondering why life is as it is, how it could have been different and when significantly-different futures branched off. I don't know if this is the first movie made to illustrate this idea but, whether it is or not, its value is unchanged. I liked that three life lines were drawn, instead of just two. I liked the theme of each line: sailing with the flow towards the sea ("He will sail the seas!") and lose love, going [...] Read more

Really unique (well, except for the fact that Sliding Doors totally ripped it off) and interesting. The politics were confusing at first, but I think I got the gist of it by the end.

An obvious forerunner to Run, Lola, Run and Sliding Doors. Good stuff, as always from Kieslowski.

Polish classic and an inspiration to many other movies like Tykwer's Run Lola Run. Kieslowski is exploring the issue of destiny. Is everything we do in life a blind chance? Are all our decisions random? An extremely original and powerful movie to watch many many times.
