The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)

dir: Garth Jennings

Mere seconds before the Earth is to be demolished by an alien construction crew, journeyman Arthur Dent is swept off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher penning a new edition of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."

Pretty disappointing. The radio series and (to an extent) the TV series prove that Adams' material can work in more forms than just on the page, but something got lost in the transition here. The movie seemed to rush through many classic bits -- such as the bulldozer scene at the beginning -- and most of the stuff that was added for the movie was lackluster. I wasn't too fond of the casting either, although Marvin worked well.

A resounding disappointment. Adams' humor simply doesn't translate to the big screen, particularly not compressed down to two hours. The casting was very good and the sets and effects were fine. It simply felt lifeless and dull. Hearing someone say "Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal" out loud just isn't the same as reading it on the page. Stick with the books.

Attempts the improbable ( Adams' novels are not literature in a classic sense, they are more of a collection of Pytonic sketches) and falls apart...not miserably though. There are parts laughable on their own. As they start jumping with the probability engine they all turn into crafted dolls in a stop motion animation for a moment. That is a great idea on its own.

Mostly Harmless. Quite enjoyable.
