Howard Hawks had a sense of humor
that let him survive the studio system
and its despots. He did mellers, screwballs,
westerns, easterns, gangsterns -- you name
it. Here's his version of the Anita Loos 'diary'
from the '20s that made her the darling of the
literati: the story of a professional girl,
Lorelei Lee, and her pal Dorothy. It's still a
musical, but the stage concept that starred
Carol Channing is scrapped as Hawks focuses
on the combustible whiz of costars Monroe &
Jane Russell. Reportedly, they had fun making it,
and it shows. MM hadnt yet been ruined by the
Strasbergs and her lousy playwright husby.
Cant recall the Name. It's all about 2 dames at
sea and in Paris - gold-digging. Jack Cole's
choreography - fast, furious, audacious -
influenced Jerome Robbins & Bob Fosse. The
dialog is loaded with ironic double-entendres.
When Janie wanders into the ship's gym and
only finds beefcakers posing, she sings,
with a winkum, 'Anyone here for Love?' Provocateur
Hawks knew exactly what he was up to, and
almost gets away with it. Wickedly funny.
