It is my quest to watch all of the Academy Award Best Picture recipients before the next ceremony.

A Man For All Seasons (7/82)

Theatrical in origins and fairly theatrical in translation; Fred Zinnemann's film works best when actors are monologuing. Luckily for the film, the majority of performances are impressive, particularly Paul Scofield who portrays remarkable conviction and nobility in the role of Thomas More. But the theatricality is also a criticism, everything feels very staged and rehearsed.

Other films nominated in 1966 -

The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!
The Sand Pebbles
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Worthy winner?
No - Although more obvious to the academy's taste, in hindsight a more worthy winner would have been Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, which although suffering from the same criticisms (theatricality) stands as a more influencial and challenging piece of work,
