Viewing Easy Rider for the AFI Project (Pippin2010)

Tend to agree with you. I watched this for the first time (I can remember anyway) a few months ago. I'd say it doesn't have the timeless appeal of a true classic, but it is an iconic record of a moment in history. If you liked this you'll like... The Vanishing Point (1971)

El secreto de sus ojos (cliodhna)

Gotta agree with you michuk, I thought the mystical-ghosty thread in The Prophet was a bit farcical. It didn't hang together with anything, and detracted from the gritty reality of the rest. However, I was prepared to overlook it, because everything else was so good.

Office Space: As Fulfilling As a Middle Finger to Management (Pippin2010)

E.T., yup, but twenty years or so after it's original release it had lost quite a bit of the hype and emotional impact I think it would have had if I'd seen it say, five years nearer the time :) In fact, thinking about it, there's a lot of films everyone else but me has seen. Of the Filmaster Top Ten, I've only seen four, and of those, I've still never gotten to the end of Pulp Fiction. Guess even round here, I've got minority tastes.

Practical Magic (1998)

Should you ever be unfortunate enough to get stuck baby-sitting a bunch of fourteen year olds girls, and are at a loss on how to entertain them, I have the answer. Nip down to your local video shop, get a copy of 'The Lovely Bones' and a copy of this, and stick them on as a DVD double bill. Meanwhile, you take yourself off for a long, hot bubble bath, a glass of wine, a good book or another room to watch a proper film.

Office Space: As Fulfilling As a Middle Finger to Management (Pippin2010)

"Occasionally, I draw looks from suspicious people who can't believe, in light of my love of film, that I've failed to view certain cornerstones, certain celebrated films that "everyone" has allegedly watched at some point or another." I'm with you on this one. I've never even heard of Office Space, never mind recognise it as a cult classic. But then I'm also the person who ddin't see E.T. until about 2002!

Toy Story 3 (santoposmoderno)

For non-Spanish speakers (like me), try the Google translate app. It's not as bad as you might expect. Great to see that Filmaster is a multi-cultural environment :0) ¡gracias! santoposmoder

H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds (2005)

Watched this one over my partners shoulder from the comfort of the sofa on the other side of the room while reading the paper.

It's a kind of test. From this position, I'll listen, and watch a bit. If a film is good, eventually I'll put down the paper, and be sucked across the room to get a closer look.

This time, I was kind of wishing I was in the next room.

Zostawić Las Vegas (1995)

Nicholas Cage is Ben, a successful screenwriter whose addiction to alcohol has lost him his wife and family. When he also loses his job, it is the point of no return. He packs up and heads to Sin City,

A Woman Under the Influence (1974)

Gena Rowlands is breathtaking in the role of Mabel, a suburban housewife who is obviously slightly unhinged. She starts out kind of odd, but in her own way charming, and descends into something much darker and more dangerous. I was mesmerised by Rowland's face. Every passing emotion is captured, and boy, there were a lot of them. Kind of reminded me of Jack Nicholson in 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'. A day later and I'm still thinking about what this was all about. Go ye forth and watch it!

Where the Truth Lies (2005)

Kevin Bacon and Colin Firth are a comedy duo whose dazzling careers come to an end when the body of a dead girl is found in their hotel bedroom. Many years later their story is investigated by a journalist who suspects there is More To This Than Meets The Eye. It's a bit of an odd one. It starts out as a sort of flashy Cabaret-type thing, and ends up as your fairly run-of-the-mill whodunnit. Having recently seen 'A Single Man' I see Colin Firth has made a career out of playing rich gay guys.

A Woman Under the Influence (philip)

Philip, thanks for this. Films of the 1970's are a big hole in my experience and I watched this on the strength of your review. What a gem. I saw it on the back of Knight and Day and couldn't help thinking that Peter Falk and Gena Rowlands were probably the Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz of their day. But what a difference. In contrast to Diaz's immobile perfection, Gena Rowlands face is just mesmerising and watching her descend into madness, if it is madness, is riveting. Peter Falk is another

Aha, thought that might be so, just wanted to check it wouldn't mess anything up. Tks

Feature request - add articles

Lolo. I've been thinking for a while about writing a couple of articles about film. Not a review of a particular film, more something like 'violence in film' or 'women and film'. I'd like them to show up in my blog. I think it's possible to do it now, by bending the existing system, and writing a 'review' that's not associated with any film - would that work or would it mess things up? And/or could there be an 'add an article' feature separate from 'add a review'? P.S. just read the roadmap -

Knight and Day (2010)

I wouldn't normally pick this, but it was towards the end of a very hard week, and all I wanted was some mindless entertainment. Gave it my best shot, but could only make it as far as minute 26.
What has happened to Tom Cruise's face? Has he had some kind of reconstructive surgery? And he's getting to an age where he really shouldn't be taking his shirt off in public. Likewise - Diaz's face seems curiously inflexible.
Even as mindless entertainment, don't bother. Watch paint dry instead.

Is Nolan the new Cameron? (michuk)

"I had thoughts during the screening." Love this. Tells me all I need to know. Odeon Leicester Square. Oh boy, that makes me homesick, although the only film I ever saw there was 'How The Grinch Stole Christmas'. Those were desperate times :0)

MUBI

Has anyone else come across MUBI? I just found it today @ http://mubi.com/ They seem to be a kind of Filmaster with bells on. They're doing streaming as well as the user stuff. I've been getting more and more frustrated at not being able to watch the more out-of-the-way films recommended by fellow Filmasterers. These guys seem to have a small, but very interesting collection. Best place to start is probably their 'about' page, here: http://mubi.com/about

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009)

Interesting for Lisabeth, the female protagonist who is a cross between James Bond and The Bride (that's Kill Bill, not Frankenstein).

Apart from that, TGwtDT is just another average whodunnit that requires the usual willing suspension of disbelief to get over the plot holes and predictable false trails.

And it's about twenty minutes too long.

THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE (Daniel Anderson 2009) (ChrisKnipp)

Thanks for the review Chris. I watched 'The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo' a while ago, and had a hard time figuring out what was going on. Especially the back story of Lisabeth. I still don't really understand how the bizarre relationship with the guardian came about. For the American remake - how about Uma Thurman? Lisabeth has to be a distant Swedish cousin of The Bride :0) Haven't seen this, and I'm not sure I will. I agree with your assessment of workmanlike. I thought TGwtDT was interesting

The Last Airbender is worse than The Phantom Menace (JeffreyVC)

Wow, great stuff. I've no idea what you're talking about (is The Last Airbender a real name?) but I really enjoyed reading the review :0) Tell it like it is!!
