First off, this isn't the 2007 teen comedy, also called 'Mo'. This 'Mo' is a (made-for-television) biopic about the life of Mo Mowlam. For those who don't know, Mo Mowlam was that rarest of beasts, a much loved and respected British politician.

She is best-known for the role she played in Tony Blair's Labour government. In 1997 she was appointed Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, and went on to play a pivotal role in securing peace in Northern Ireland. 'Mo' focuses on her years as a Cabinet minister. The broad story will be known to anyone who opened a UK newspaper at the time, but the film includes many fascinating insights into her personal life, and the behind-the-scenes politicking, that didn't make it into the press.

Mo is played by Julie Walters, fast becoming one of the grandes dames of British film. She's great in everything she does, but taking on the part of such a well-known and loved personality must have been a challenge even for her. As usual, she steps up to the mark, and manages to perfectly capture the heart and spirit of a remarkable personality. She's supported by a sterling cast (David Haig, Steven Macintosh, Tony Maudsley and the rest) who, to a man, turn in superb performances.

It's probably too much of a specialised subject to attract non-Brits. For those Brits who missed it on television, it is available on the wonderweb. Watch it if you can. It is a fitting tribute to an exceptional woman.
