Chalking it up under the I-don't-get-it column, and tagging it "interminable" and "I-want-my-two-hours-back".
All warm and fuzzy, Korean style.
How tepid. I really don't understand why would anyone give Malick money to make more movies after this. It's just so, to borrow an expression from Spacek's character, blah. The leading couple are blah, the relationship is blah, their entire existence is blah, the cinematography is blah, and the badlands themselves (that part of the USA? the USA itself?) are most blah of all. It's like a deadpan mockumentary rather than a "dramatization" of the case, complete with the is-this-for-real voiceover. Not terrible. Just not very interesting.
Compelling. Even as it chews through the usual tropes and setups. Even though it degrades into MTV music video editing style of filmmaking. Even though the performances were uneven at best and cringeworthy recitals at worst.
The backgrounds are a treat, but the characters are visibly and unfortunately 3D, and it mars the experience. The symbolism works on quite a few levels, which complements the simple story rather well.
A little aimless and unsatisfying, but charmingly done. Roll the watermelons.
Visually interesting, though not always executed well (characters could use touching up). Otherwise ugh. Not exciting, not clever, not deep. A prime slice of meh.
