The Hunt (2012)

This is a masterpiece, one of the most frightening, human and therefore by nature dualistic films that I have seen in a long time. Vinterberg's direction and the script is perfection, the acting (notably by Mikkelsen) is sublime and glorified, and...it's like listening to The Beach Boys: it may sound simple, but it's really hard to create a thing so beautiful, which could so easily become bad.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

If I were 12 years old, I'd be ecstatic about this film: fables, monsters, heroes, weird worlds... I'd give it 9/10, if not full marks. But here, it's simply nice if you can look beyond the obvious signs of racism, nationalism and xenophobia.

Dans la maison (2012)

One of Ozon's better films. From the eyes of a self-confessed bitter school teacher, a young student is repeatedly berated and goaded to write a page a day on what is happening in his life. The teacher and his wife are involved, and the story unravels. Great tempo, good interaction, and as usual with Ozon, everything feels otherworldly.

Broken (2012)

This film is a mixture of kitchen sink, compressed drama, an open mind, brilliant direction, very strong acting, a laudable script and wonderful colours. I loved the tempo. The story flowed. You laugh, maybe cry, you're angry, the characters speak to you. It said a lot to me about my life. It's very carnal and now, and this film will probably seem relevant to a lot of people for a very long time. Highly recommendable.

The only bad thing about it would be the aspect of false accusations. Even though they exist, it's interesting to see facts about it: http://theenlivenproject.com/the-truth-about-false-accusation/

Searching for Sugar Man (2011)

An endearing lost-and-found documentary on an artist, Rodriguez, that never got big and who's apparently lost a lot of royalties to record companies, this is a beautifully photographed documentary that is tight, gains momentum at the right moment and is boosted by a very zen-ish central character, but (in my opinion) lacks oomph to make it great. Still, it's righteous to see Rodriguez finally get some more cred (and hopefully money, even though he doesn't seem to crave it).

Sid and Nancy (1986)

I love Gary Oldman. I love The Sex Pistols. I love Alex Cox' "Repo Man". This, however, is a piece of shit film. It's not even funny in a comic book character type of way. I firmly recommend watching the superb Sex Pistols documentary named "The Filth and The Fury" instead of this muck. In this film, everything's supposed to be shocking war, and all the subtleties and genius of the actual group are lost. I can't even begin to list what's wrong with this film: how Nancy Spungen/Sid Vicious/John Lydon/Malcolm McLaren is portrayed/acted/written? How the soundtrack is by some cover band? That the script seems to be a draft written by a 7-year-old?

The Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

I like to be able to add the words "comedy" and "tragedy" at the same time here. This is a movie that is neither wacky or poking fun, but rather a glimpse into a quite cute film where honesty plays a major part; it really doesn't matter if that honesty is intended or not, but to me, it's massaging the idea of what mental illness really is: trying to act "normal" (i.e. don't say or do what you really want), or act out on your impulses too much. Well played by both lead actors (not to mention De Niro, who I feel acts spectacularly in this film, doing a rôle that I seldom see in American mainstream flicks) and quite well written. The major downfall, as I see it, would be that the film is quite transparent from start to finish. Still, even with the entire playbook (ha!) laid out, it's a very good, cute and sad play.

Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)

Written by Truman Capote, it's little wonder that the dialogue and human interaction is great, but what really gives this film its kick is the character Holly Golightly, the stellar performance by Hepburn, the tempo from Edwards and the soundtrack by Mancini. A lot of name dropping, I know, but it's worth it. To me, Golightly is a disturbing person. I'd rather that than boring, any old day of the week. Still, it's entrancing. While the male lead, or should I say hangaround, is slightly stiff and boring, Golightly comes to life and appears to do as she wishes. Or is she just a figment of a damaged imagination? Very watchable, with a tearful ending.

Ruby Sparks (2012)

Despite carrying a promising torch - a writer who's writing his girlfriend - this is a flawed film, mostly where tempo and character build is concerned. It starts off with a young writer who's written a terribly successful first novel and is having problems with the second; there is none. He writes and dreams of a girl to come his way, and she does. He quickly finds out he's written her, or rather, as much as she's giving away by merely existing. As things turn sour in the relationship, he retorts by re-writing her to fit him more, of course ending up with even more problems. The synopsis is interesting, but the plot is wafer-thin and the script is sadly only funny and partially sweet. In the end, yes, this is a smart dramatic comedy, but I'll choose something like "Office Space" over this any day.

We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists (2012)

This is a straight-forward, chronological, western world account of what hacktivism is about, whether it be through propaganda, trolling or taking down sites in order to get your opinion (or anti-opinion) through. It all starts through college-day protests and ends with Anonymous splintering, lawsuits and idealism abound. Through it all, the core of this film - as seen by yours truly - seems to be the opposite of what states of power (including corporations) want you to believe: you can make a difference, and you can be the start of genuine change. Also, it's got jokes.
