US indie from Nicole Holofcener is getting 'adult' attn in NY & LA
as a bittersweet 'dramedy' -- without special defects or a comic
book brand -- yes, a rarity today fr Hollyfools. An excellent cast
digs into this New Yorkerish short story about two sisters whose
yenta grama is dying and the married couple neighbors who can
hardly wait to snap up her apartment and expand theirs. The dialogue
crackles. There isnt a widget of sentiment. It's very true to life in
New York: no stopping for some death when a great apartment
slurps at you. Although pic doesnt send you over-the-top, it
eschews nearly all the cliches. The edit is sloppy, the direction
leaves you wondering if the actors have legs since it's mostly
looming faces, the sc has its wilts midway, but the film commands
a certain respect. And the first half is darkly funny.
